The size of the €7.9 million budget for the Ballina Municipal District for the year was a issue of contention for all the elected members at the February meeting of the municipal district this week. The budget was adopted by the members, but with a number of them stating their reservations about the size of the budget.

Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly has called for the proceeds of the proposed sale of 1.42 hectares of land owned by Mayo County Council in Killala to Killala Precision Components Ltd to be ring fenced for projects in the town.

The newly adopted Mayo County Council commercial rate of €68.76 is here to stay for the next few years at least. At this week’s reconvened budget meeting of the council, the members voted in favour of maintaining the rate at what it was last year. With the abolishment of the three town councils in the county earlier this year, the county council is now the only rating authority in the county. However, despite the abolishment of the town councils, rate payers in both Westport and Ballina will continue to pay a lower rate than the rest of the county for at least next year as part of an equalisation process. The rate in Castlebar was already the same as the county council one, while Westport had the lowest commercial rate of €63.23, and Ballina’s rate was €64.52.

A battle is looming over the amount of money that Mayo County Council wants to allocate to the four municipal districts for discretionary spending by the councillors in these areas.

At yesterday’s meeting of the Ballina Municipal District there was serious anger directed from the councillors at the Office of Public Works. At their previous meeting the councillors had requested that the OPW attended yesterday’s meeting to address their concerns over flood defences in the Ballina area.

The elected members of the Ballina Municipal District were given a presentation this week on the progress made by in the promotion of the Mayo North area as a tourist destination.

Elected representatives in Ballina Municipal District made it clear that the development of tourism in the north Mayo region will be high on their agenda over the next five years.
